Tezeta is five years old when her mother takes her away from Djibouti. She doesn’t return for more than twenty years. She vaguely remembers Aunt Aster, the walk to school, and playing with her cousin. She retains her name, which means “nostalgia” in Amharic, and the surname Abraham, from a father she doesn’t know. Raised in Italy,

her mother brings her to Rome to escape an abusive husband and places her in a convent school. In the 1990s, she grows up like in an 18th-century novel, in a sort of routine prison that stifles her spirit. At fourteen, she leaves the convent, wins Miss Africa Italy, becomes a model, and discovers a world that is less glamorous than it seems.

As an adult and mother, she returns to Djibouti to fill the gaps in her history and uncover the truth about the escape that changed her life. Nostalgia is a deeply intimate memoir and the journey of a woman searching for her place in the world. But nostalgia does not overwhelm Abraham’s pages. Her debut book is above all a story of courage and emancipation, one that resonates with the power of hope and rebirth.
