The Pelanda is a large area of roughly 5,000 sq. mt and a precious example of industrial architecture in an area once devoted to pig-meat processing. The project is the result of a careful renovation programme which, among other things, has preserved the structures and furnishings of the so-called "Gallery of Cisterns".
The main building comprises a large central aisle, a truncated conical chimney and other metal equipment and fittings, imbuing it with a unique atmosphere. The entire complex has been restructured on the basis of a project designed to turn it into an open, module-based system in terms of its structures and open to the public in its entirety, with large glazed surfaces enhancing its volumes and perspectives.
The Pelanda's different areas are particularly suited, in their variety, to hosting the full range of performance arts from dance and avant-garde theatre to music, installations and workshop activity. The Azienda Palaexpo plans to use the spaces also as productive residences in order to give artists from a broad variety of different disciplines the opportunity to engage in research and experimentation.
