With an immediate and instinctive approach to live performance, the MAS’ music is a product of the improvisation of three musicians, Simone Pappalardo, Simone Alessandrini and Mauro Remiddi who, abandoning their respective musical worlds, have created a different world, familiar in its individual elements but alien as a combination of its parts.

An electric cloud where the voice emerges before becoming confused with the distorted echo of the guitars and sax, the rhythms split before rejoining, the music’s centre of gravity is melodic in parts and constantly changing. The sounds of the voice and the sax are manipulated and sampled live, with drum machines in the background, amid Simone Pappalardo’s DIY instruments the form of the song emerges for an instant before crumbling once again, removing all reference points.

The MAS have a primordial and rapid mark, their approach to electronic music is very close to Paleolithic animal graffiti.

Follow an animal’s tracks and it will lead you to its home, wrote Joseph Campbell, similarly the MAS invite us to follow their sound tracks, the home on this occasion will be the Mattatoio, the place where they first met.

MAS was supported and produced during the 2021 edition of Prender-si cura edizione 2021, a project of artistic research and production residencies held in the spaces of La Pelanda.

Simone Pappalardo, Simone Alessandrini and Mauro Remiddi met in 2021 in the course of an artistic research residency at the Mattatoio in Rome in the context of the Prender-si cura project.

Hailing from different backgrounds, a synergy soon developed between them that led them to play in some of the most important venues in the city.

Simone Pappalardo, an honours graduate of the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome, now teaches electronic composition at the Conservatorio di Perugia.
Pappalardo’s musical career is based on the development of timbres through live electronics. His work has been presented at the Luxembourg philharmonic, at the Festival Imprudences in Paris, at the Sound & Music Conference in Hamburg and at many other international festivals.

Pappalardo has worked with, among other, Gianfranco Schiaffini, Mauro Lanza, Andrea ValleMederic Collignon, Gianni Trovalusci and Jean Francois Laporte.

Simone Alessandrini is a saxophone and guitar player born in Rome. He is a member of the new generation of jazz players in Italy and the leader of the Storytellers, a quintet with two records distributed by Parco della Musica Records to its credit.
Musica Jazz magazine named Alessandrini one of the “top jazz musicians” of the year in 2018. He has worked with numerous leading artistes on the Italian jazz scene including Roberto Gatto, Enrico Pieranunzi and Stefano di Battista.

Mauro Remiddi, a Roman artist who began his main project, Porcelain Raft, with which he recorded two records for Americana Secretly Canadian (label of Bon Iver and Antony and the Johnsons) in New York in 2010.

After years of tours in Europe and America (also opening for bands such as Beach House, M83 and Blonde Redhead), Remiddi has recenly taken a pause from Porcelain Raft to devote his energy to the more experimental part of his music, his voice is still present but it becomes part of the electronic fabric and the song form crumbles here to make way for the unforeseen.

MAS are currently planning to record their first album, an event due to take place this summer.
