“It is a letter with its mouth open, it has a curved belly that presents itself empty, with two arms-protuberances, elongated claws that are interchangeable. A letter that has the shape of a magnet, the shape of a theatre with no stage, of a wave with descending and ascending strength. If you say U and extend it, it is “you”, if you pronounce it raising your tone it is a cry of pleasure-happiness, if you lower it is a cave that echoes, U is the first letter in what we call a non-place, ever since Thomas More first shaped the concept of Utopia.”
Taking our cue from this inventory of possibilities. Wwe will build, together and for the people with whom we connect, an environment with an elongated and sinking shape, which we will multiply and to which we will add an exclamation mark: UUUUUUUUUUUU!, the promising length of an open space, a bathtub full of Us.
In a space that appears to be single, different experiences and modes of expression are merged: theoretical excerpts, words, marks, languages, objects, fabrics, ink, sound, skin and immaterial offerings. We will build, in a week with a group of people, the place of an encounter for those whom we shall be hosting: the mouth of the U will remain open on Saturday 21 to welcome other Us, spectators, passers-by, spirits and people who want to mix in with this UUUUUUU sound. UUUUUUUUUUUU! is also the result of a four-day workshop with participants in Trajectories, a pathway of free workshops that is part of the Mattatoio’s Recreation programme.
Industria Indipendente is Erika Z. Galli and Martina Ruggeri. Their artistic process crosses different languages and practices, constantly redetermined by the urgency of exploring whatever opens up horizons of narrative and expression, in a ceaseless search for affinity, for skin-deep sensitivity and gaze. Their action is triggered by the encounter between perspectives which, in recognizing each other and merging with one another, open up other possibilities for expression. Something that is born as already shared, collective, full, yet still without a subject: a dialogue with several bodies, individual voices and expressive traces. Whatever the dimension they choose to activate, their work articulates certain questions and reflections: the relationship between the human being and nature, the dimension of “unproductive” time, the construction of alternative and fictitious worlds in which to found communities and alliances, the constant overturning and recreation of individual and collective identities.
