The legend recounts how Prometheus was punished by Zeus for giving man fire, thus freeing him from his animal nature. An eagle was to devour Prometheus' liver for all eternity for his disobedience to the lord of Olympus. But we might equally say that Prometheus' liver was to be devoured for his having given the human race a second chance through a gesture of solidarity. Is Prometheus a saboteur who deserves his punishment, or is he someone who is endangering his own life in order to rebel against a despotic power in the name of a common good?
How do we connect the original legend to the interpretation that Mary Shelley gives of it with her Dr. Frankenstein? Could Julian Assange be our latter-day Prometheus? Greek mythology, like all myths, exists in order to force us to ask ourselves questions regarding human nature, not necessarily to find the same answers. Should we always obey the rules? What if a rule is unjust? Who decides what is right and what isn't? What if I break a rule for a just cause? Who are our Prometheuses today?
Prometeo by Agrupación Señor Serrano, a theatre company based in Barcelona that creates original productions addressing discordant aspects of contemporary human experience, is the first chapter in Olympus Kids, a project based on a disruptive and critical vision of Greek mythology designed exclusively for a child audience.
re-creatures devotes an evening to children in an effort to introduce them to the theatre and to the stories in mythology with a performance that gets them involved in the first person.
